i love cedar shake--my grandmother has them but they're actually against code in california (at least where she is) due to fires. crazy!

The house I grew up in had cedar shakes on the roof. I live in the land of asphalt shingles now, though. When we replaced our roof last year due to storm damage, we had to go with th asphalt shingles again. Our insurance won't cover cedar shakes.
Interesting...I've always loved cedar shakes, but wondered it they might be a fire hazard...apparently from the comments some insurance companies think so...I still love them!
I love the cedar too, and wish I could have it on my roof, but it's against code her in my county.

OK - don't think I stole your idea - I have been working on a cedar shake post! I love the look, but you know what they say - 'twice the price, half the life'.
OMG -- I can't believe that someone shares my love for cedar shake! I grew up in a Dutch colonial with CS roof and am waiting for our roof age so that I can put it on our house! Great post!
They look beautiful. I love them.... but longevity is a factor I guess.
Cedar shakes last about 25 years here, I love them and currently have them on our home. We are going to get a quote for the next house since it suits the style but I know the cost is going to be way up there with the pitch design. Hopefully I can talk Rob into it, fingers crossed!

I agree too I love cedar shakes, it gives a house a whole new look, I love the textural aspect of them, but hey maybe it's just because I'm a girl and I love pretty things regardless of them being practical or not!! I say fight the fight for that roof!

My parents have cedar in Maine, but I never see it in Houston. Is it a climate thing, I wonder? Super fine houses in Houston use slate. Absolutely gorgeous! I think that would be my roof obsession!
