The last powder bath on yesterday's post (repeated at the bottom) has me thinking about paneling vs. planking. I love both, I really do. I like that either can be dressed up or down--- even though planking is usually more casual with paneling more formal. Which do you prefer?

OH! These images are so beautiful! I think I prefer paneling (though I truly love planking as well!) I recently paneled my dining area and filled in the open spaces with mirrors... I think panelling is a little more glamorous and planking is a more natural feel!
Here is the link to my paneling!

PLANKING! I think that is the Lowcountry in me...
Although I love paneling too. I think planking is a little more casual and carefree whereas paneling is a bit more formal.
Gorgeous images! I can't wait to see your house. Did you go Dark in the master??
I refuse to choose, that is like choosing a favorite child Brooke!!
It comes down to the style of the home, I am tossed up on what to do in our own place, I keep waffling back and forth between the two. The nice thing about paneling is you can stop it at different heights, where planking is an all or nothing job. xo
Both options are SO beautiful! I guess it depends on what kind of vibe you want in your house. Paneling is definitely more formal, and planking to me is more casual, beachy, and rustic.
Hm....I think I like paneling on most homes, but planking if i had a beach house or vacation home :) i can dream, right? love your blog!
Both are great options depending on the space. Paneling has a more finished and formal feel.
I like both! I pulled up your blog at a meeting with a client last night:) You two are cut from the same cloth. You are going to love her nursery.
My vote is paneling I love this look. I think planking is for a really casual look as a beach cottage or country home, planking just seems to work in all spaces. Great images and fun post,Kathysue
I've always loved paneling and dream of having it our house one day in the coastal city of Charleston. ;)
well...they're both so beautiful! I can't decide. Love them both. Adds something special for sure.
I love them both, but they do have 2 different feels. I would take either ;)
Paneling...I love the character, it's beautiful by itself. So glad that you will put some new life into a great house.
I prefer paneling.
I like planking - it seems simpler to me. And I love simple :)
Both are beautiful! Can't wait to see pictures of your new house...though I'm not excited that that will mean you're not in Birmingham anymore...
We got lucky - we have both in our house. They really change the mood of the rooms. Like you said, the paneling is mor formal and I think it's gorgeous and the planking is fun and casual. I love them both! :)
That's a tough one. Planking is probably more my style, but I love the paneled look too.
I love both which is funny as the word panneling always used to bring shudders. Back when panneling was cheap pressed wood (think 60's or 70's?) and horrendous! We had it at our cabin. Eeewww
I think it really depends on the house, for me. I can see myself living full-time in house with paneling, but vacationing in a cottage with paneling...so funny how I make those associations! So many beautiful shots here!
Yes, I agree depends on the house. I love the panneling in the first photo. most of my house is wainscotting, have you thought of that? beautiful pictures you shard today!
Depends of course on the house, but just to pick one I prefer the planking.
It's paneling for me. So classy and sophisticated.
I love them both. It's absolutely impossibly to decide! I suppose I will just have to have two homes for both styles.
great examples. I think I prefer the paneling - I guess I like the dressier look...good post.
PANELING!!! Sorry.. didn't mean to yell, I just like to vote!
Brooke, these are such beautiful spaces. I prefer the paneling in my home - it's a little more formal, but in my imaginary beach house...definitely the planking!!
We like both but really want to try paneling. We have a hall way that it might look great in. Thanks for all the great images.
I love high end looking moldings. They really can cure a lot of ills like when you have plaster walls fro 1930... just sayin'. I left you an award on my blog today!
Both give a different feel in the room, but I would choose planking.
WELL, one of the paneling pictures is my house and one of the planking pictures is my house, so you CAN have both, but I prefer paneling if I had to pick.
Great post, Doug! I love everything on here!!! And I agree...you can have both!!! My house is a total mix....of everything I love!
Wow - this is a hot topic!
Given that I am building a house now, I had to face this 'debate' quite a few times - and I am resolutely on the side of paneling. I told my architect and designer that I wanted no wainscoting, no ship-lapping, no planking whatsoever - if we did anything, it would be paneling. We are doing some high end paneling - and some 'low end' paneling. The high end has to be done by a cabinet maker, the low end by a trim carpenter. Doug could probably tell us the difference!
I definitely think they are both beautiful and they both have their place. We used planked panels in our kitchen remodel and I LOVE it.
I love them both. I'm really drawn to planking since I don't see it here in Seattle. I wonder what the cost difference is. That could be the deciding factor.
I love all of your pics but HORIZONTAL PLANKING is what I love most! I am hoping to do this in our playroom/studio once it gets renovated!
Definitely planking. Even though it can be custom, paneling still looks cookie cutter to me. Planking is more charming and adds so much character. I'd feel more comfortable in a home with planking than one with paneling!
Wow...what a great post. We just renovated our house and went with paneling....everywhere. Our builder went a little over the top if you ask me so I am happy to see art hung that way in the first photo. it makes it kind of tricky. After seeing this amazing collection of photos on both, i do like planking as well. it's maybe a little more informal.
