Table vs. Island

3.01.2011

While I think that an island is more functional for me/my family in our kitchen... I do love the look of using a table instead:

And my favorite:

Which do you prefer?

I'm with you. Functionality wise, island...Look wise...table hands down! If your kitchen is big enough, I say go table! I have always obsessed over those last two kitchens...to die for!

I love that idea. I especially love the first photo.

I just L O V E an eat-in kitchen, it's my favorite kind! They're so practical and these are drop dead gorgeous. Thanks for sending me to your post today it's beautiful. So funny we used the same pic, and I almost said in my post how I adore a kitchen with a table versus an island, ha ha.

Love the table look but the island is more practical. Great pictures, I love the chandelier in that last photo.

Ia m am island girl, in all senses, LOL! But with the kitchen I have to think about the way that we live. We do entertain a lot and I find the island to be more conducive to that than having a table in the center. Now, with that being said we do have our large kitchen table next to the kitchen in a nook area. I just love being able to dress up the island with platters, flowers, and candles while the table is left untouched for guest to sit around. I am sure if we had more of a galley style kitchen then the table might seem like a great option, but so far we haven't had they style...maybe in the next home. xo

I really really wanted to do this in my new kitchen but I didn't have the depth to allow for it. Absolutely adore the look.

I just can't imagine not being able to turn around and work at an island. I need that functionality. I like an island with an eating area on the other side. But I LOVE having a combined eat-in kitchen with an eating area next to the kitchen so that both are opened to each other. So I guess in a way, I like the best of both worlds? ;P

I love the look of the table vs island. I just know our family and pushing in their chairs is not their priority. i can envision myself tripping over stray chair legs:o

Which do I prefer? Umm, every. single. one. Those are some dang gorgeous kitchens!!! Makes me daydream of demolition and no-budget renovations. *sigh*

My preference is a table. I bought a work table while designing the new kitchen, but couldn't make it work without an island. The kitchen needed a prep sink and storage. Compromised with a table end on the island that seats three. The work table is going in the old kitchen turned sewing-laundry-garden-coat-utility room.

I just moved and now have an island after having a table that i thought i loved for years in a previous residence. An island is my vote! So much more functional for me!

I'm torn. I love the space a table gives to the kitchen the most. But, personally, I would HAVE to have the storage that an island brings. Maybe a table with some storage would work!

Gotta love Tommy's kitchen (the last one pictured) a.k.a "your favorite". It has the right amount of everything. I love it too.

So hard! I like the storage of an island, but loving the welcoming, sit and stay a while feel the table gives.

If I did a table, I'd have to have LOTS of storage space elsewhere.

Fun to see what you're considering and imagining!

I love the look of the table but the island has so much storage.

When I did my kitchen I went for the island - only due to storage issues. But, I tryed to make the island look like a piece of furniture so it would not appear so built-in. I'm happy with the results.

We have an old farm table in our kitchen that I had raised to counter height. We have 4 stools around it, so it serves as both a table and an island. The best of both worlds!

I love the look of a table in the kitchen. So functional and practical. As long as you have the space for it, I say go for it!

Me again! A thought for you: an island with a dine-in counter at the end. I've got that in my kitchen and love it.

Here's a pic if that helps:

I've also seen it done where the island drops down to table height, so it's an island with a table connected. Maybe a happy middle ground?

Hope you had a blast in Atlanta! Did you peek in Savvy Snoot, too? I bet you were dying in Bungalow--a neutral heaven (I love it so).

Table all the way--I just love it.

Totally agree! I cannot so much as argue. I do prefer tables than islands too. They give a nice and homey feel that everyone is looking for. I am so addicted to photo #4! I love antique wood and this one looks just like it. I’m really glad I found your blog (reminds me of opting for recycled park benches in case I want to purchase outdoor furniture). I finally have someone to share my preferences with. Thanks for sharing!
